Grant Purpose

The Clinical Research Seed Grant program, sponsored by the Global Institute for Hispanic Health (GIHH), seeks to foster and promote collaboration between Driscoll Children’s Hospital (DCH), the Driscoll Health Plan, and the Texas A&M University Health Science Center to advance clinical research aimed at eliminating health care disparities in the Hispanic communities. This program provides research seed funding for clinical research projects with teams comprised of clinicians and scientists. Each grant of up to $25,000 maximum (no overhead allowed) will be awarded in July 2018.

Grant awards are based upon scientific merit and the project’s relevance to GIHH program goals of clinical, translational, and health services research projects in priority areas of diabetes and obesity, asthma, infectious diseases, neurological disorders, cancer, and the opioid epidemic. Proposals that leverage the Healthy South Texas platform or the DCH health plan data are encouraged. The goal of the program is to support pilot research projects that will address the health needs of the South Texas population and that will lead to future extramural funding.

Research proposals should focus on South Texas and health needs of the Hispanic population.  All investigative teams should include at least one member from Driscoll Children’s Hospital or the Driscoll Health Plan and at least one member from the Texas A&M University Health Science Center (HSC). Other Texas A&M University System members, including all colleges of Texas A&M University, and any other Texas A&M System member (e.g., Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and/or Texas A&M University-Kingsville) are also encouraged to apply in collaboration with Driscoll and HSC colleges.

Independent investigators at all faculty ranks and tracks are eligible to apply. It is required that every application document collaboration between DCH and HSC investigators. Proposals from applicants who do not meet these eligibility criteria will not be reviewed.

General Requirements

Evidence of IRB or IACUC approval for research involving human subjects or animals, where applicable, must be provided by May 30, 2018.

Applicants can apply for up to $25,000 in direct costs each year for two years. Second year funding is contingent upon research advancement of first year activities.

The following persons are required to sign the application/proposal with the acknowledgement that they have read and reviewed the proposal before submission: the Applicant/Principal Investigator (PI), Co-Investigator (Co-PI), and the Applicant’s Department Head (Texas A&M) and Driscoll Children’s Hospital designee (DCH).

Announcement of Awards

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of awards by July 1, 2018. Selected investigators will receive an award agreement that must be signed and returned to the GIHH before funds are dispersed.

The grant recipient must submit an electronic copy of a Final Scientific Report and a Final Financial Report. Additionally, please send any publication reprints in refereed journals resulting from the grant support. The Final Scientific Report plus the Final Financial Report are due upon completion, or no later than 3 months following the completion of the grant project. The recipient must acknowledge funding support from the GIHH in any publication and presentation abstract/poster resulting from the research.
